In a hard-hitting documentary that directly addresses the issue of Islamic terror with detailed data and facts, Sunni Muslim Raheel Raza suggests that in order to effectively deal with the symptoms of extremist ideologies within the religious group, first we must call it by its real name — radical Islam. She highlights how many on the left, in an effort to be politically correct, fail to understand the scope of its threat to our safety and security.
Raza also explains in “By The Numbers – The Untold Story of Muslim Opinions & Demographics,” about the three layers of radicalization and how we must engage in an open and frank conversation about the state of global Islam in order to defeat the extremist elements.
In the short documentary — which was produced by the Clarion Project — Raza states that Islam is the fastest growing religion globally and within this century will become the largest on the planet. She goes on to explain that among the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims there are three spheres of Islamic radicalization.
The first circle, “Violent Jihadists,” are members of terrorist organizations such as the Islamic State, Al Qaeda, Hezbollah, Boko Haram, and Hamas. They are the smallest, but most deadly and radical part of the sphere, with hundreds of thousands of active members of the myriad terror groups wreaking havoc across the globe. She also points out that it takes very few terrorists to inflict great carnage and change the way society operates.
“Islamists” are the second part of the sphere. They seek the same end-game as the violent jihadists, but do so using the political system instead. In the film, Sam Harris — appearing with Ben Affleck and Bill Maher on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher — explains what kind of people are part of the Islamist group stating:
“They are just as convinced of martyrdom and paradise and wanting to foist their religion on the rest of humanity, but they want to work within the system. They’re not going to blow themselves up on a bus. They want to change governments. They use democracy against itself.”
Various groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, and even CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) fit that category and are often tied to terror groups.
Perhaps the most disturbing sphere is the third one — and the largest by far, representing hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide. The “fundamentalists” are the Muslims who hold views that diametrically oppose western values. The vast majority of fundamentalists support the killing of people who leave the Muslim faith, consider honor killings of unfaithful spouses as “justifiable,” and want Sharia Law imposed in their countries.
The actual data come from Pew polling of thousands of Muslims around the globe and paint a stark picture of the size and scope of the issue, which so many in the west deny or remain unaware.
Raza — a Canadian Muslim journalist and activist — tells of the disquieting number of young Muslims in North America and Europe who agree with the killing of citizens by suicide bombings. She says that “this is the next generation” of radicals.
She ends the documentary by stating that it is time we address the issue of radical Islam and if critics are silenced then we are abandoning our values of truth and free speech, as well as abandoning human rights in favor of political correctness.
