Add the Seattle Sonics to the list of teams that can possibly compete for a runner-up trophy with other every team NBA not named the Golden State Warriors. With Durant’s reboant signing of 2 year contract with the Warriors, Seattle which was left at the alter and franchise-less by Starbucks magnate Howard Schulz in 2007, has as good of chance as any in chasing the coattails of the Golden State super team.
All kidding aside, with Durant’s migration to the Bay Area, the vaunted idea of competitive balance has virtually been dissolved in a league defined throughout its history by dynasties. With the top heavy trio of Golden State, Cleveland and San Antonio, the odds of another team earning a championship remains virtually impossible. While, cancelling the 2016-2017 season and handing the Warriors a trophy would be an act of insanity, fans in the majority of NBA cities are allowed to employ a plethora of skepticism in the wake of the signing.
