“The toil of all that be Helps not the primal fault; It rains into the sea and still the sea is salt.” Housman’s verse, eloquent and looming, warns against the futile intellectualizing of fate and circumstance.  However, the key word is salt.

The crystals of sodium-chloride ionic bond, in a shimmering and collaborative dance of lattice work and functionality, remind us with a hint of beauty that we all are derived from the salt rich oceans through god’s hand.  Of course from ancient to modern civilization, salt has been a key facilitator for food preservation methodologies and garnishment.  If the compound has not enjoyed enough of an influence on humankind, a cutting-edge artist is utilizing the crystals and chemistry for a wondrous and magical act in the fashion world.

Israeli artist Sigalit Landau’s medium is the biblical Dead Sea in deriving and fabricating a salt encrusted gown.  For over 2 years, the once black garment has been fighting the currents, depths and high salinity in undergoing a breathtaking transformation and is now ready for the limelight.

Her completed work and vision, “The Salt Bride”, is on display in London and a true testament to tenacity and innovation.
