Josh Brown produced feats of legendary trajectory into low earth orbit with an array of booming kicks coalescing with epic circumstances. The veteran kicker, first drafted out of the University of Nebraska by the Seattle Seahawks, literally possessed a circulatory system comprised of elements of tundra and glaciers, due to his propensity in staging late-game heroics.
In his personal life however, the superficial layer of luster and intrigue forged by professionalism with NFL stadiums was quickly vanquished and replaced by demons and the reality of an abusive disposition and with the soft target his now ex-wife. Brown served a 0ne game suspension to open the season, stemming from a 2015 arrest in a domestic violence arrest in King County in Washington State. No charges were filed against the kicker as County prosecutors sited a lack of sufficient testimony. Now the league has apparently opted into reopening its investigation into Brown’s tumultuous relationship with his ex-wife in the wake of documents being made public which allegedly detail a hideous magnitude of mental and physical abuse. The documents include journal entries and emails authored by Brown. On a side note, with complete knowledge of the 2015 incident, the Giants willingly re-resigned the kicker to a 2-year contract earlier this year.
While apparently adhering to a stringent conduct policy, the NFL’s disciplinary sanctions towards Brown to begin the season fell short of the “mandatory” six game sentence documented for a first offense. As the actions of Ray Rice are still fresh within the minds of many fans, the threat of another public relations train wreck is clearly on the horizon. Brown will not accompany the team to London as the league processes its initial findings.
As television ratings for regular season games continue to tumble thanks to the unpatriotic actions of Colin Kaepernick and the decision of various players to opt out of participating in the National Anthem, can the league survive another scandal of an epic magnitude. The old joke mocks the acronym of the NFL to be interpreted to be “National Felons League” and while statistics clearly do not support that notion (Brown had a violent past), it is becoming an increasing chore to stomach the hypocrisy and increased divisiveness forged by the pipe dream of “every given Sunday”. Again, why should we care?
