When Barack Obama comes to Chicago next week to deliver what is being billed as his “farewell speech,” he probably won’t be spending any time preparing his home there for his return.

One look at the year-end murder tally in his adopted hometown is enough to convince anyone that the Windy City has become no country for ex-presidents. Fox News put the body count for 2016 at 762, while the Chicago Sun-Times had it at 780.
The Chicago Tribune also pegged it at 762, but added the following caveat:
Data kept by the Chicago Tribune tallied at least 781 homicides for the year; the Police Department statistics do not include killings on area expressways, police-involved shootings, other homicides in which a person was killed in self-defense or death investigations.”
Is this the legacy of liberalism; the result of something that, according to the Sun-Times, was predicted more than two decades ago by Yale University Professor of Sociology Elijah Anderson? He authored a study titled “Code of the Street: Decency, Violence and the Moral Life of the Inner City.” And here’s what the Sun-Times suggested explains the situation in Chicago:
The inclination to violence springs from the circumstances of life among the ghetto poor — the lack of jobs that pay a living wage, the stigma of race, the fallout from rampant drug use and drug trafficking, and the resulting alienation and lack of hope for the future.”
The New York Daily News noted that Chicago last year racked up more slayings than New York City (334) and Los Angeles (294) combined.
Liberals responsible for perpetuating this role model of mayhem blame the “easy availability of guns.” Fox News reported, “Police and city officials have lamented the flood of illegal guns into the city, and the crime statistics appeared to support their claims: Police recovered 8,300 illegal guns in 2015, a 20 percent (increase) from the previous year.”
Most guns are not “illegal” in the technical sense. It is just against the law for way too many Chicagoans — street thugs, juveniles, convicted felons — to have them. These individuals don’t bother with background checks, Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) cards, and concealed carry permits; those inconveniences (infringements?) are reserved for the law-abiding.
When Obama delivers his good-bye speech, it may be to the city as well as in the city. He will have the chance to take up residence anywhere he chooses. For a while he will remain in Washington, D.C.
After that, nobody really knows. Back home in Chicago, will anybody really care?
