Chicago police investigating the Monday morning slaying of Cook County Judge Raymond Myles in front of his South Side home say the gun used in that crime is linked to another shooting in January, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
One man identified as Joshua Smith was in custody and faces charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and obstruction. He allegedly was the getaway driver in the caper, which may have involved at least two other men.
Myles was shot several times as he reportedly came to the aid of his girlfriend, who was apparently being robbed as the two were preparing to leave for a workout. Police say this was a targeted robbery that had nothing to do with Myles’ serving as a judge.
Smith has a criminal record, having done a stretch in prison for armed robbery in 2003, according to the New York Post.
WLS News, the ABC affiliate in Chicago, said Smith was identified with the help of surveillance cameras in the neighborhood. Those images helped investigators identify the license plate.
However, the Sun-Times said Smith actually drove to a police station later in the day and was taken into custody.
Judge Myles was one of three people killed in Chicago Monday, and 12 other people were wounded in shootings across the city, according to WBBM, the CBS affiliate. So far this month, DNAinfo.com says 23 people have been killed in the Windy City.
The Sun-Times said more than 130 people have been killed so far this year. The newspaper keeps a running count of murders in Chicago.
Chicago has become the example for mayhem in the country, and the city gun rights activists point to as an ongoing example of gun control failure.
