With the ability to instantaneously edit content and media amid the digital sphere, the idea of reality has disturbingly devolved into an ambiguous concept. Posing the question of “What is reality online?” is akin to attempting the answer the classic riddle of “What sound does a falling tree make in the forest, if there is no one around to hear it?”
Thanks to the inherent double think derived from the entitled younger generations in placing importance on feelings rather than facts, the idea of truth is often convoluted by simple changes made to wording, photos and videos.
As “fake news” has dominated headlines thanks to the ominous reality of falsehoods becoming accepted reality due to the platform in which they are delivered and combined with the aversion of conducting simple research utilizing search engines, society requires a technology that can correct this problem. And what better corporation to step up to the plate than Google in providing an eloquent and free solution? Right?
Wrong.
The Verge reports that the search engine giant may soon be releasing an application that automatically and instantaneously removes undesirable objects from photographs. Scary stuff. Like Photoshop on crack, what could possibly go wrong here? The thrilling scene from “Back To The Future” comes to mind, where Michael J. Fox is witnessing his siblings virtual being erased from a picture one limb at a time and forever extinguished from existence. While the technology is supposed to be “intelligent”, between hacks and abuse, the fleeting concept of reality is now forever doomed for ambiguity as Google defines truth through digital photographic editing capabilities.
