In an effort to commemorate “National Gun Violence Awareness Day,” Kim Kardashian inadvertently made the nation aware of something else: she enjoys armed security while evidently advocating for stricter gun control laws that affect average citizens.
“After what happened to me in Paris, I know how important it is to be safe and to have armed security,” she said in an essay quoted by Elle.com. “All of my security team is armed, but they also support stricter gun control laws and believe that we should restrict access to firearms for people with mental illness, anyone previously convicted of a misdemeanor, those who have been subject to a temporary restraining order and those at a higher risk of committing gun violence.”
According to etonline, Kardashian is “getting political.” She wrote the article to “bring attention to the reality of gun violence and gun control.”
Described as “an American reality television personality, socialite, actress, businesswoman and model” by Wikipedia, Kardashian asks in her opinion piece, “Is it more important to protect the second amendment (sic) than to protect our own children? Maybe you think so, maybe you don’t–but it’s important for us to at least continue to discuss and debate this openly, and to bring attention to the reality of gun violence and gun control.”
Friday was declared Gun Violence Awareness Day, although various marches and other activities are scheduled on Saturday around the country.
Elle noted that Kardashian works with anti-gun billionaire Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun prohibition lobbying group.
“It’s been 18 years since Columbine,” she wrote, “10 years since Virginia Tech, four years since Newtown and we’re coming up on the one-year anniversary of the Orlando nightclub shooting. In almost 20 years, our country has made very little progress in enacting laws that would help protect innocent Americans from people who should not have access to firearms. Right now, there are more guns owned by civilians in this country than in any other country in the world.”
However, gun rights advocates have repeatedly countered that none of the gun control laws suggested by anti-gunners would have prevented any of the tragedies Kardashian lamented.
While she has armed security, average citizens are essentially on their own. Laws designed to discourage gun ownership and concealed carry make it difficult for those citizens to enjoy the same degree of security as a socialite enjoys.
