The seemingly serene pool of tepid river water protected from the merciless currents by a small peninsula of mud and grass, is actually a prominent hunting ground for a school of hungry and crazed piranha. No, these metaphorical fish are not after literal flesh as the main entree, but they feast on the tender and unfulfilling meat of political correctness, especially words and phrases that spark contrived controversy and drive numbers on news sites.
Carolina Panther’s starting quarterback, Cam Newton, who is a charter member of the feeding frenzy of the “sticks and stones won’t break my bones, and words will always hurt and profit me” society, recently tossed his own verbal chum into the angry waters of indoctrination. Fox News reports that during a weekly news conference Newton responded to a question from female reporter Jourdan Rodrigue, with a quick jab about women and the passing game. “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes. It’s funny,” quipped Newton. He then proceeded to answer her question.
Rodrigue, who covers the team for the Charlotte Observer, was apparently offended by the commentary and proceeded to ascend the soapbox of social networking with a classic fit of whining in earning her 15 seconds of newsworthy fame and causing instant carnage in the politically correct pool by setting her sites on Newton.
Newton, who is a known purveyor of controversy and horrendous fashion choices, has led Carolina to a Super Bowl appearance, but at a hefty cost. The quarterback is still maligned for a crucial play in the game, where he failed to make a reasonable attempt at recovering a fumble. Of course the feminists and various members of the counter cultural movements will ensure that his statement to Rodrigue is a permanent fixture in his trophy case of dissent. As for the remaining reasonable Americans, it is a safe bet to simply observe the puzzling behavior within the piranha pool from a safe distance and protect our hands, wits and rights against the angry school of insatiable fish.
