The response by British politicians to the reality that the murder rate in London has surpassed the numbers in New York City, follows a predictable and unproductive pathway.
Mayor of the UK capital, Sadiq Khan, made the startling and listless proclamation earlier this week, that city officials would explore a regulation on knives, as with an absence of firearms, residents face the full ire and danger of violent criminals navigating the cobblestone avenues armed with sharp objects, and no fear of deadly consequences. The British policy of legal self-defense is such a mess, that even in wake of successfully deterring invasion attempts by fearless perpetrators, residents must cope with the lingering worry that bloody retaliation will come at some point, as the system is rigged to favor the young, strong and savage. Call it “armed inequality” and a flawed experiment into pure Darwinism, where it all boils down to a numbers game, as no mechanism of balance exists leveling the slanted playing field in good versus evil. However, this is not a mere thought experiment, as the life and liberty of citizens is at stake. The nightmare has only just begun.
The Washington Examiner shares this horrific story of a 78-year-old London man, who successfully defended his home and wife from an invasion attempt by two thugs. Harry Osborne-Brooks somehow managed to permanently dispose of one the intruders with a knife, while the other crook fled the scene. Now, Brooks and the neighborhood are at the whim of the deceased criminal’s friends and colleagues, as individuals of questionable moral character linger on the streets and target residents with threats and harassing gestures, in calling for their own perverted and warped delivery of street justice. In a story that has no chance for graceful closure, this will probably not end well, as citizens cower within their homes and rely on the police for protection, while the government flounders to untangle the impossible politicized knot of the inevitable.
Supporters of responsible self-defense have preached throughout history that when a right is taken away by government, it is never coming back. Maybe, people will start to listen.
