An armada of 12 US warships is steaming toward the Middle East as US President Trump mulls an attack on Syria in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack on civilians, according to The NY Post.
The aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman left Norfolk, Virginia on Wednesday with five escort warships. They plan to join four destroyers and two nuclear-powered subs believed to already be in or near the Mediterranean, the Times of London reported.
The “armada” of American warships headed for the Mediterranean sends a clear message to Russian authorities as President Trump settles on a US response to last weekend’s deadly chemical weapons attack in Syria.
The New York Post, reports that the fleet of 12 warships is the largest armada heading towards the region since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
President Trump vowed a stern US response on social media last week following dictator Bashar al-Assads brutal attack that left over 60 civilians dead; including dozens of women and children. Russian authorities have outright rejected the accusation, saying the UN was trying “to hide” evidence.
“Get ready Russia,” the President tweeted this week, adding that “smart” bombs were heading towards the region.
“Never said when an attack on Syria would take place. Could be very soon or not so soon at all!” the President added.”
Amid Russia generated concerns that the chemical attack was a “fabrication” staged by an unnamed foreign intelligence agency, US Ambassador Nikki Haley confirmed that the “US will only act on proof.”
Haley said on Friday that there should be no rush to launch military action on Syria, but that:
“At one point you have to do something.”
“You don’t rush decisions like this,” Ms Haley told reporters, adding that if there is haste “you make a mistake.” Ms Haley spoke ahead of a Security Council meeting called by Russia to discuss the threat of US-led military action in Syria.
President Donald Trump is analysing all the information and taking measures to avoid any unwanted repercussions, she said.
“We have to know that there is proof and we have to know that we are taking every precaution necessary should we take action,” she said.
