Rasmussen Reports on Tuesday released a stunning survey result that reveals a whopping 72 percent of likely U.S. voters think Congress spends too much time on vacation, while only 12 percent disagree and 16 percent aren’t certain.
This comes as yet another member of Congress has announced he is not running for re-election so “he can focus on recovery” from alcoholism. Republican Rep. Thomas Garrett of Virginia is the 44th Republican to announce retirement or departure from Capitol Hill at the end of the current term, according to the Daily Progress.
When it comes to criticizing vacation time, the whole country seems to be in agreement, according to Rasmussen. The poll found that 71 percent of Republicans, 72 percent of Democrats and 72 percent of independents concurred that members of Congress take a lot of time away from the office.
While they’ve apparently been spending lots of time off the clock, they haven’t passed on a couple of pieces of legislation critically important to Second Amendment voters: National Concealed Carry Reciprocity and the National Hearing Protection Act. Simply passing measures in the House doesn’t get legislation to the president’s desk. And the GOP may be running out of promissory notes if they expect to woo gun owners to keep Republicans in power on the grounds that they will pass legislation during the next session. Such campaign pledges may have run out of traction.
Another revelation in the Tuesday survey was that, “Among all voters, just 21% feel it would be better for the United States if Congress met less often, while 32% believe it would be worse. Thirty-nine percent (39%) say it would make no difference if Congress convened less often.”
Adding insult to injury, Rasmussen also noted, “Most voters continue to believe the Republican-led Congress is doing a poor job, perhaps in part because they lack faith that lawmakers will do anything about the biggest issues facing the country.” That can’t be good news for the GOP heading into the mid-term elections.
On that note, Fox News is reporting that President Donald Trump has warned “that Special Counsel Robert Mueller and the ‘13 Angry Democrats’ on his team ‘will be MEDDLING’ in the midterms by pursuing their Russia probe so close to the election.”
Maybe if Congress appeared to spend more time on the job and less time on vacation, none of the drama would be happening. Then, again…
