Furnished with geologic timelessness and wisdom, the gravity harnessing words of Mencius, the 1-B ethereal disciple to the original founding principles of Confucianism, are still relevant within the modern universe after surviving the cyclic and cruel cleansing processes of the universe and the development of civilization. Quietly muttered on the humid ancient plains of the Zou state (now part of the Shandong province of temperamental Chinese communist goodness), the telling phrase from the decorated sage still resonates with some authority today, and yet those who should be the target of the life lesson are insufferably oblivious to the soul encapsulating premise to a sensible practice. “Sports and politics do not mix.”
As disturbing as the visual of the half of The View roster attending a bachelor party featuring a raucous school bus load of alpha male 40-something conservative professionals enjoying countless libations from the three kegs in the aisle way and the anticipation of the ultimate destination of the gentlemen’s club boisterously verbalized, the oil and water mixture of professional sports icons violating a time-tested axioms shifts the law of entropy into overdrive, thanks to the presence of social networking and bulletin board material, chaos reigns.
Business tycoon, entrepreneur, and owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban, opted to join the political fray in unbridled fashion, by giving fans and Americans a delusional and brain cell inhibitor deconstructing rant in junk physics by attempting to redraft the entire Second Amendment. While the shark among the Great White species of the business world has mastered the pecuniary realm wholesale marketing and product placement, his grasp and depth in issues relating to personal liberties, government and human nature are a detriment to legendary resume. With the product of professional basketball stagnant for a captive US audience, as rock star players aspire to be greater than the game itself, and the aversion to playing defense rivals Jim Carrey’s disdain for measles vaccinations in spreading reprehensible propaganda, the last thing NBA needs is a hack politician in the making spouting off dime store rhetoric. As the NBA finals reach cruising altitude, and the basketball lacks a level of intrigue and passion shackled by the contrived presence of entertainment rather than athletics, the misguided and disjointed rants of Cuban and others, at least give the league some valuable PR outside of the confines of ESPN and sports fanatic’s matrix.
The absence of future hall of famer Kevin Durant should by the top underlying narrative of a six or seven game snooze fest, but instead the polarizing Cuban, and now Golden State coach Steve Kerr, have ascended to the poll position of the F***book bot-infused trending news feeds of the entire known universe. While the Dallas Maverick’s owner is a roll player in the current Kabuki theater production of “I said it because I can… and it makes me feel good.”, the hipster and GQ cover icon of trendiness went on a full-scale nuclear attack of current firearm policy in the US and took shots at the NRA, reports Fox News, the gesticulating pontification session repelling gun owning fans, and law-abiding citizens.
Maybe, it’s the stylish haircut and the side-effects of product utilized for a bold personal branding mission or osmosis from the Bay Area environment and proximity to Silicon Valley, but the aggressive agenda insinuating a heightened level of bureaucratic control introduced by the former player and teammate of Michael Jordan, but the indifference emanating from the mouth of coach on the biggest stage for professional basketball illustrates the detachment from reality that current plagues a percentage of the population and does not adhere to economic segregation. After the entire Warrior franchise refused multiple invitations to celebrate world titles at the White House, Kerr should understand that the tawdry and brattish antics of accepting presidential hospitality puts the team in a position of wariness with half of Americans, and the recent public lobby for increased gun control makes the concept of the team sickeningly intolerable. The team gestured a bold collective middle finger to the current administration by choosing to reflect upon the ascension to basketball excellent with Obama. But again, when an overzealous coach decides to discount the basic framework dictating wisdom, individuals who choose to watch sports in their valuable free time and escape from the brazen intensity of divisiveness, clearly want a political perspective intermixed into the context of a championship story line.
Could the ulterior-motive of the Golden State coach involve a future seat as a California politician? Former NBA star and Phoenix Sun legend Kevin Johnson traded the gym shorts of retirement for the suit of a public servant as the mayor of Sacramento. The former California Golden Bear (Yes, the influence of Berkeley culture on the young mind is a powerful thing), ruled over the city with iron clad progressive directives for two terms, and Kerr would be a comfortable fit for the political milieu of the people’s republic comprised of knee jerk visceral reactions and not workable solutions in creating problems.
While Kerr’s slant on firearms is understandable when considering that he lost his father in a tragic incident involving an active shooter, hijacking the platform of professional sports to forward an agenda is simply not acceptable regardless of the cruel circumstances that life has bestowed upon an individual. Along with Cuban and San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich, the trio of NBA social justice warriors unceremoniously patronizing fans with a cumbersome guilt trip, who support the lucrative salaries of coaches and players by paying an average of $78 per ticket, buy loads of merchandise, and maintain ratings in supporting the entire business model, the Golden State leader is the walking epitome of retched hypocrisy. Not even the entertaining vernacular of Charles Barkley can save this smoldering dumpster fire of idealism that is afflicting a historic corner of pop culture, which is an amazing feat of futility.
If Kerr wants to bring a knife to a gunfight, he can always take an extended sabbatical to London and expose himself to the failed experiment of street justice Darwinism being deployed in an alarming outburst of violence. However, most armchair radicals would never put themselves in harm’s way to prove a point, if the situation ever reached an extreme level of intensity.
