Vanity Fair is out with what amounts to fawning praise of Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s gun control—referring to it as “gun reform”—scheme as she rises in the polls, while unmistakably taking a swipe at competitor Joe Biden, following their appearances at a “Gun Safety Forum” in Las Vegas last week.
That event was organized by March for Our Lives and the Giffords gun control group. Nine Democrats appeared at the event, which was pure gun control from beginning to end.
And there was this acknowledgement by writer Dave Cullen: “Years ago, the movement represented here realized it had a branding problem. Gun control was a term that might as well have been designed in a lab to alienate libertarians zealously guarding their guns. The movement has been working to rebrand itself as gun reform ever since.”
But Second Amendment activists are on to that, calling it “camo-speak” designed to mislead the public about what the gun prohibition lobby is up to.
Warren, according to the article, repeated the term “gun violence” 14 times during her 30 minutes at the microphone. However, as several speakers attending the recent Gun Rights Policy Conference held last month in Phoenix observed, there is no such thing as “gun violence.” There’s violence, and that’s it. Going after the tool is a disarmament dodge.
Warren, according to the story, favors gun locks, and apparently licensing of gun owners.
“Safety locks that may mean that guns work, and work effectively,” she reportedly stated, “but only for the person they’ve been licensed to—not for a kid who stumbles across it and wants to check out what it is, or for someone who steals it and wants to use it in the commission of a crime.”
Licensing is a term that raises hackles among activists because it reduces the right to keep and bear arms to a government-regulated privilege.
Warren claimed to have grown up “in a family with guns.” She also claimed to have Native American genes, which conservatives will likely not allow her to forget.
And she acknowledged that hunting rabbits and squirrels is not “gun violence,” which writer Cullen followed with this observation: “The signal was clear, to both sides of the fight: Your guns are safe. I’m not here to control or even reform them—just the violence.” But that’s not exactly accurate because Warren wants to ban semi-autos and supports “buybacks.” Besides, as activists repeatedly remind everyone, the Second Amendment is not about hunting.
As for Vanity Fair’s treatment of Biden, it can be summed up in this passage:
“More stunning was the contrast with the lovable candidate who followed her onstage, Joe Biden. He was enthusiastically received, but over the course of his 30 minutes you could feel the air hissing out of the balloon. Congresswoman Giffords lobbed him a layup from the audience, and he dribbled the ball all over the court…”
Meanwhile, NPR has done gun owners a favor by reporting how Democrats come down on key gun control issues.
They all favor a ban on “assault-style semiautomatic weapons.”
All but two support adoption of so-called “red flag” laws, with Tulsi Gabbard and Wayne Messam being “unclear.”
They all support so-called “universal background checks.”
Three—Kamala Harris, Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke and Cory Booker—favor mandatory “buyback” programs that have been dubbed “compensated confiscation.” A dozen like voluntary “buyback” efforts and four are “unclear” on the subject.
Most support repeal of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act that prohibits junk lawsuits against gun manufacturers and retailers. Two don’t and three are “unclear.”
There is nothing “unclear” about what Warren and her Democrat colleagues are after, Second Amendment activists are convinced. It’s not “reform” nor is it “safety.” It’s control, and in some cases confiscation, and no amount of reassurance is going to change a single mind.
