Presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden is likely to pick Sen. Kamala Harris, the vehemently anti-gun-rights California senator and former attorney general, as his running mate, according to speculation from conservative columnist Miranda Devine, who appeared on Fox & Friends Tuesday.
Biden already declared anti-gun former Texas Congressman Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke as his point man on guns if the former vice president wins in November. It would stand to reason Biden would want to surround himself with like-minded gun prohibitionists, and he is under mounting pressure to appoint a “woman of color” as his veep pick.
According to Fox News, U.S. Rep. Karen Bass might not get the nod because of her past praise of the late Fidel Castro. That doesn’t go over well with Cuban exiles in Florida, or those who escaped other communist or socialist regimes, the story explained.
Harris is no amateur when it comes to restrictive gun control proposals. While she was running for the Democratic nomination last year, her campaign website listed her plan to end “gun violence.” Like Biden, she would ban so-called “assault weapons” from being imported into the U.S., which may not mean much since several domestic gun manufacturers already produce such rifles.
Her other measures included mandating so-called “universal background checks” on all firearm transfers, and repeal of Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), which prevents lawsuits against firearms manufacturers and gun dealers for crimes committed with their products.
Her campaign website also suggested Harris has a “blame the gun” mentality, arguing, “In 2017, nearly 40,000 people were killed by guns in America.” Guns didn’t kill anybody in 2017 or any other year. People criminally or negligently misusing firearms are responsible, along with all of the people who, out of despair, took their own lives. Also count the small number of people killed accidentally, and the people killed justifiably by police or armed private citizens.
Firearms were simply the tool in the equation.
Nobody tries to ban knives, machetes, hammers, crowbars, bricks, rocks, fists or feet, yet all of them are also used to kill people.
Ms. Devine is an Australian who writes for the New York Post as well as the Sydney Morning Herald and the Sun-Herald newspapers, plus the Daily and Sunday Telegraph newspapers. She contended that Democrats are “desperately trying to hold onto their monopoly on the black vote.”
President Donald Trump, Devine noted, has been “quietly wooing the black vote and doing quite well.” She said that’s been “a real shock for the Democrats.”
Now here’s something to consider. Thirty-eight percent of likely voters think Biden “is suffering from some form of dementia,” according to a recent Rasmussen survey. That includes 20 percent of voters in his own party, Rasmussen revealed. Sixty-six percent of Republicans and 30 percent of Independents also think the former vice president has a problem, due to his frequent gaffes and his “confusing statements.”
If Biden were to win in November, and if he is suffering from dementia, how long might it be before Harris becomes the first woman to hold the presidency? That’s a concern conservatives have been quietly sharing for several weeks.
