When the King County, Wash. Prosecuting Attorney’s office sought $100,000 bail on a suspect who allegedly pulled a gun on a woman just days after being released from federal prison “for being a felon in possession of a firearm”—and a judge released him on personal recognizance—there was not a peep from the gun prohibition lobby.
This happened only days after an Everett police officer was murdered, allegedly by an armed, recidivist felon, and two weeks after the slaying of a Pierce County sheriff’s deputy by an armed convicted felon.
Yet there was silence from the Seattle-based and billionaire-backed gun ban bunch. Perhaps it is because anti-gunners have yet to figure out how to talk around the “loophole” in logic represented by their endless demand for more gun control laws which, as underscored by the above references, have so far failed miserably, according to many in the Second Amendment community.
Nobody in the anti-gun movement wants to acknowledge their failures, locally or nationally. Instead, the gun control lobby invariably comes back with demands for tougher laws, which many in the firearms community sarcastically suggest is as close as they will ever come to admitting their earlier restrictions haven’t worked.
Anti-gunners have also been wailing at the adoption of “permitless carry” laws in three states so far this year, Alabama, Indiana and Ohio. They cringe at the thought of honest citizens exercising their right to bear arms, contending it will endanger police officers, without acknowledging criminals already carry guns without licenses or permits, so the danger really already exists.
Maybe the solution to the violent crime uptick is not to penalize law-abiding gun owners, but to keep criminals locked up. Yet there is nothing about that mentioned in the recently-released Biden White House report headlined “Taking on Gun Crime and Violence with a Whole-of-Government Approach.”
Pierce County Sheriff Ed Troyer put it best when he observed on Facebook, “At the end of our service for (slain deputy Dominique “Dom” Calata), we learned Everett Officer (Dan) Rocha was killed in the line duty. Not just police officers, homicide rates of citizens are skyrocketing. Neither of these cop killing suspects should have been out of jail. Same with the other homicide suspects in the first 3 months of this year. The liberal, progressive, socialist experiments have failed. Time to stop.”
The recently-released suspect who allegedly drew the gun on a woman is what street cops occasionally refer to as “a model citizen” with heavy sarcasm. In addition to two recovered handguns—the origin of which remains under investigation—officers also found “12.28 grams of cocaine, 190 tablets of amphetamines, 118 grams of suspected marijuana,” the prosecutor’s office said. For someone who had only just been released from federal prison, this suspect had been busy.
According to a note from the prosecutor’s office, “We argued that he is a danger to the community and would be unlikely to return to court if released because of nine warrants since 2009. Mr. Kirvin was released at the first appearance over our objection.”
Gun control initiatives in 2014 and 2018, placing restrictions on law-abiding Evergreen State citizens, have had no discernible effect on violent crime or keeping guns out of the wrong hands. The number of homicides has crept upward in the state, especially in Seattle where the gun ban lobby is headquartered.
According to FBI Uniform Crime Report data, Washington experienced 209 murders, including 141 involving firearms in 2015. In 2020, the most recent year for which data is available, there were 298 slayings, including 177 involving guns. Seattle logged 26 murders in 2015. In 2020, the city posted 52 homicides. That translates to failure.
