A new Rasmussen poll released Monday reveals that 59 percent of “likely U.S. voters” believe that, over time, President Joe Biden is “getting less and less mentally sharp.”
The other 33 percent disagree, the veteran polling firm reported in a news release.
The poll comes as USA Today is reporting the White House is planning “a series of events” this week which will be “focused on combatting gun violence.” The events have been organized by the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Monday’s event was a nationwide “virtual meeting” with Black leaders around the country.
The 81-year-old Democrat, who has spent more than a half-century inside the Beltway, serving on Capitol Hill, then vice president and finally as president, is pursuing a second term in the White House. However, in public appearances he has frequently stammered through stump speeches, sometimes appearing as though he did not know how to leave the stage, and at other times mistaking peoples’ names.
Some of his sharpest critics suggest Biden is actually serving Barack Obama’s third term.
According to Rasmussen, a whopping 61 percent of voters “believe it’s likely that the news media are helping cover up evidence of President Biden’s declining mental sharpness, including 45% who consider such a cover-up Very Likely.”
On the other hand, 36 percent do not consider it likely there is a media effort to conceal the president’s condition, including 20 percent who say it isn’t at all likely.
Breaking things down along party lines, 82 percent of Republicans and 60 percent of Independents think Biden is getting less mentally sharp, an opinion shared by 36 percent of Democrats. The same percentage of Republicans think it is “somewhat likely” that the media is helping cover up the president’s problems, along with 62 percent of Independents and 39 percent of Democrats, then survey said.
Fifty-four percent of Democrats, however, do not think the president’s mental sharpness is declining. It’s a view shared by only 29 percent of Independents, and a paltry 14 percent of Republicans.
Rasmussen also revealed, “Majorities of every racial category – 59% of whites, 58% of black voters and 61% of other minorities – say that Biden is getting less and less mentally sharp over time.”
Meanwhile, Rasmussen’s Daily Presidential Tracking Poll is not doing Biden any favors. Forty-three percent of likely voters approve of his job performance, while 56 percent disapprove. It’s a poll result that has been fairly consistent for several weeks. Only 23 percent “strongly approve” of Biden’s performance, while 45 percent “strongly disapprove,” almost a 2-to-1 margin.
