A commercial aircraft attempting to abort a landing due to the presence of wind shear, contacted the runway with retracting landing gear, instantly triggering a series of catastrophic events in causing the plane to crash and ultimately burst into flames Wednesday afternoon at Dubai’s international airport.
According to officials, the pilots of an Emirates Boeing 777-3 carrying 282 passengers, decided to execute a go-around in taking precautions against heavy side winds. Miraculously, none of the passengers or the crew were killed. Unfortunately, a heroic firefighter battling the plane’s fully engulfed empty carcass on the runway lost their life.
The flight, EK521, originated in Thiruvananthapuram, India. The incident effectively shut down the world’s third busiest airport for nearly 6 and half hours as crews cleared the debris and the scene was secured.
Wednesday’s crash follows the Asiana Airlines incident at San Francisco’s International Airport 32 months ago, where another Boeing 777 crew landed short of the runway and the aircraft broke into pieces.
