Those who traveled to China before the frenetic modernization of the nation’s skyline are familiar with the reality of certain, shall we say “lacking amenities”. With this notion in mind, we can forgive the Chinese architects and designers for the immediate Western reaction to the building’s obvious resemblance.
The punchline generating structure is actually the newest addition to the campus at North China University of Water Conservancy and Electric Power in Henan. The current debate on the building’s inception focuses on whether or not the plans were created deliberately.
As Chinese architecture has grown decadent and bizarre over the last 15 years in an attempt to gain prestige on the global stage, the communist government recently called for a ban on “oversized, xenocentric, weird” building designs and shapes. How closely will the edict be enforced, the future will tell.
