The “Master Platform” of the Democratic Party as it opened its convention in Chicago contains a five-paragraph section on “Gun Safety” which translates to a continuation of the Joe Biden-Kamala Harris gun control agenda of the past four years, but now it is owned by the vice president.
Included in the package are:
Universal background checks
A ban on so-called “assault weapons” and “high-capacity magazines”
Repeal of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act
Mandatory “safe storage” (which is not defined)
A national “Red Flag” law
Increased funding for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
Increased funding to the FBI for firearm background checks
Funds for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) for “gun violence research”
The document calls “gun violence” a “public health crisis” and rips former President Donald Trump—the man Democrats pushed Biden out of the way because he had no chance of beating him in November—for having overseen “the largest single-year increase in murders in history, including a 35 percent increase in gun murders.”
According to Fox News, the document erroneously refers to a “second Biden Term” 19 different times. The document says Biden and Harris “are running to finish the job.”
The convention opens as a new Rasmussen survey published Monday reveals that only 35 percent of likely voters think the country is going in the right direction, while 60 percent believe the country is on the wrong track.
The convention also follows a story on ABC News from last week showing the dramatic differences between vice-presidential candidates Tim Walz and J.D. Vance. The Republican nominee came out vastly ahead of the Democrat, which could make a difference in November.
