If it weren’t for double standards, Democrats would have no standards at all; that seems to be the running joke that has gained new momentum in the wake of President Donald Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey.
That’s not Fox News reporting, it is the Associated Press in a story headlined “Democrats once blamed Comey; Now they’re defending him.” The report reminds readers, “Starting with Hillary Clinton herself, Democrats have blamed James Comey for her loss to President Donald Trump. “And yet when Trump fired the FBI director, those same Democrats rushed to defend him.
‘Twilight zone,’ Clinton’s campaign manager Robby Mook wrote on Twitter. ‘I was as disappointed and frustrated as anyone at how the email investigation was handled. But this terrifies me.’
“Behind the apparent Democratic turnabout on Comey: While his pronouncements about his probe into Clinton’s handling of emails infuriated them, he’s also the man who’d been looking into whether Trump’s campaign had colluded with Russians. That left many blasting the firing as an abuse of power, even if as they did not quibble with the reasons the White House put forward as cause.”
The icing on this cake dates back almost 24 years, to 1993 when then-President Bill Clinton fired then-FBI Director William Sessions, as reported at the time by the Washington Post.
Democrats seem content to play the “But, that’s different” game with the so-called mainstream media. In turn, the press seems to be lapping it up, linking virtually every story of the Comey firing with the probe of Russian influence on the November election.
The press still seems to be deftly ignoring the fact that no matter what the Russians, or anybody else, allegedly did by exposing emails that revealed things about Hillary Clinton and the DNC’s apparent tinkering with the primary debate process, those emails weren’t generated by anybody in Moscow.
So maybe the Democrats aren’t as angry about the Russkies so much as they are about the fact that they got caught and exposed.
But, like Seattle Mayor Ed Murray acted during Tuesday’s announcement that he will not seek re-election because of the scandal now engulfing his ability to lead, Democrats fired up about Russian hacking and Comey’s firing are playing the victims. Murray, incidentally, is a very liberal Democrat who is trying to portray himself as a martyr for gay rights.
Six months ago, after Hillary lost to Trump – learning that it wasn’t “her turn” after all – Democrats were ready to burn Comey at the stake for having announced the investigation into her emails had been reopened just days before the election. Now that Trump has pushed Comey out, Democrats seem more inclined to canonize he now-former FBI director.
It seems that when Democrats play the victim card, it means they have no other cards in the deck.
