In a gesture and collaboration that is long overdue, America’s Pastime will spend an evening with America’s heroes July 3. Though the tepid match-up between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves will soon be lost in the haze of the past, the historic off-field and interesting storylines are sure to bring an onset of goosebumps.
Sunday’s match-up will be the first major league regular season game played on a military instillation as Fort Bragg’s new baseball complex will be at capacity with 12,500 troops and family members in attendance. The inception of the North Carolina field of dreams is fascinating (construction began in March) as the site was reclaimed from a golf course. At the conclusion of the game and subsequent festivities, the complex will undergo a complete transformation into a baseball and softball center for use by families on the base.
On the eve of the anniversary of America’s Independence, 97- year- old WWII veteran Hubert Edwards and lifelong Braves fan will have an opportunity to meet his favorite players on the field. A priceless moment for a true patriot.
