Hi, I’m Mark Walters, host of two nationally syndicated radio programs, Armed American Radio (Sundays 8-9p ET, 5-8p PT) and Armed American Radio’s Daily Defense (M-F 4-5p ET, 1-2p PT). I’m a member of the Board of Directors of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and co-author of two critically acclaimed books, Lessons from Armed America with Kathy Jackson (Foreword by Massad Ayoob-Whitefeather Press 2009) and Lessons from Unarmed America with Rob Pincus (foreword by Ted Nugent-Whitefeather Press 2013).
Each week I’ll be highlighting some of my favorite moments from the previous six days of radio broadcasts and providing a link for you to hear it for yourself. It only fits then that this first highlight is my on-air discussion with the great Dave Workman which aired on Monday 3-20-2017. I’ve known Dave for a while, and he is always a fan favorite. In fact, I can tell you with certainty that he is my mother’s favorite and, well, she is my number one fan! That will come as no surprise to those of you familiar with his decades of incredible work. More on that in a moment but first here’s a little background for you regarding the construction of both shows.
The daily AAR broadcast has a different flavor than the weekend “monster” show for a couple of reasons. The daily radio program consisting of one hour, is predominantly current-event driven, relying more on the “news” of the day as it unfolds in real time and when it pertains to the topic of our RKBA. You get more of me and my dissection of real time, pro-gun and pro-rights events. The massive weekend program, on the other hand, is always guest driven. Regular contributors include Alan Gottlieb (a man who needs no introduction in these pages!) and AWR Hawkins, award-winning 2A journalist from Breitbart News. Other big name guests populate segments throughout the remainder of the three-hour program around the regular contributor’s segments.
Now that I got that out of the way let’s get back to this week’s highlight reel. I’ve been broadcasting for nearly a decade on national radio, and when an individual show as a whole, or a guest in particular, is exceptionally good, you know it right away. When the host and guest are “clicking,” it is immediately evident in the discussion, not only from the on-air banter but also from a technical standpoint. Monday was one of those days. Simply put, Dave and I were “on” this week, and when that happens, you get great radio. Monday was great radio and frankly, an instant classic that I can keep in the vault and run anytime I need a day off!
I reached out to Dave one half hour before airtime. That’s the fun part of live daily radio, it moves in real time and moments before airtime your daily research and prep may take you seconds away from the microphone going hot.
In this case, I wanted to bring the story of Seattle’s gun tax and Dave’s requests to see the city’s numbers. They’re stonewalling and Mr. Workman, on behalf of all law-abiding gun owners, wants the truth. While that was the impetus for the program, what unfolded spontaneously became fantastic, educational, informative and flat out entertaining radio for responsibly armed Americans. Enjoy it!
