It’s not everyday that one encounters the wave of the century in the form of an eight story behemoth towering over the aqua blue waters of the ocean surface. For a Brazilian surfer chasing legendary status, his quest shrouded in brevity did not take him to the stereotypical dare devil beaches of Australia, California, or Hawaii, but to a quaint town setting on the coast of Portugal.
Nestled 60 miles to the North of Lisbon, Nazare is known for beaches, festivals which include bull fighting and of course epic waves. Fox News reports that Rodrigo Koxa, successfully shredded the liquid leviathan last November, and judges recently came to the official consensus that his remarkable feat was worthy of a page in the record books.
Not all of the Nazare surfer alum bravely testing the limits of human performance have experienced the glory of defeating the seas, as a UK surfer was literally pummeled under the shear brute force and tons of water generated by a 50 foot wave in an epic wipe out. As with most adrenaline sports, the inherent risks separate the masses from the elite.
