The NFL’s Opening Weekend- Do We Care Anymore?

September 12, 2016 By Conn Williamson

Fortunately for the entire gamete of rabid football fanatics, hope and enthusiasm is renewed in the form of the standings all bunched up before the first snap of the official season occurs.

In a league where parity is an illusion contrived by the incessant and strategic marketing efforts swarming around the head office in 60 year’s worth of data and tactical brainstorming sessions, reality paints a less than favorable picture of the quality of product.  While the continuous cycle of fandom reaches a crescendo for the majority of the captive audience after the initial four weeks of the regular season, the lingering weight of stagnation threatens to passively alienate core viewers.

The NFL’s brilliant move to embrace Fantasy Football with the enticements of financial gains, unlimited engagement opportunities and prestige has captured a broad range of demographics and made the regular season relevant on an end-user level.  However, how long can the gaming level be sustained in compensating for mediocre play and undersized media markets competing against the national brand names and Dallas Cowboys of the world?  Colin Kaepernick’s inexplicable choice of forum for polarizing hijinks secured an unlikely wealth of public relations ammunition in piecing together what should be a long and tedious season.

What We Know Thus Far-

-“Parity.  You talking Parity?”  Cleveland ungracefully bowed to the might of the Eagles in a 29-10 defeat, however the next largest margin of victory was only 9.

-The Heavyweights Fall Hard-  Two savvy picks to advance deep into the playoffs endured losses and a fourth was a hair away from starting the season 0-fer.  In stunning fashion, Cam Newton and the Panthers grasped defeat from the jaws of victory, Arizona took an inexplicable loss and Green Bay nearly coughed one up in Jacksonville.

-Pete Carroll and The Offensive Musical Chairs-  Maybe the experiment of attempting to convert defensive lineman into protectors has almost ended after Russell Wilson was nearly de-limbed from a constant pass rush.

-September 11th–  Thankfully, the memory of the tragedy and the victims was preserved with relative grace, as there were no instances of misguided protests towards our nation or law enforcement officials.

-The day of football was culminated by the success of the first feminist-comic successfully guiding the New England Patriots to victory.
