Researchers recently discovered a rare species of orchid that has a striking resemblance to an ominous and unsettling cultural meme. Aptly named Telipogon diabolicus for its sinister demeanor and sardonic expression, the species is exclusive to southern Columbia. If the startling face is not enough, the flower has sharp barbs the sides to repel predators. Those who lack faith are encouraged to avoid the plant’s habitat.
While the demon shape may be visually disconcerting, the actual function is to attract pollinators. It is estimated that only 30 Telipogon diabolicus orchid plants exist in the wild and 7 are currently flowering. Experts believe that there are hundreds of undiscovered orchid species in Columbia alone.
